With the advanced state of technology and the reliance we have on it in our daily lives, we are exposed to digital devices all day long whether at home, at work or in public spaces with electromagnetic waves such as antennas and Wi-Fi.

There have been several debates regarding such exposure and how it can potentially affect us, but the truth is, we are all connected through our computers, tablets or laptops and they have become our daily companions even though mobile phones remain the pioneer in our daily communication.

We take our mobile phone with us wherever we go.

In fact, it is a common practice that it is hardly ever turned off and even when we are getting ready for bed, it is still placed closely to our bedside.

Is it bad to sleep near your mobile phone? You bet.

If you do not want to turn off your mobile phone at night, at least try to place it a good distance from your bed. This particular habit of placing it right beside us that is adopted by millions of people, can in fact cause many problems, which is detrimental to our health.

Smartphones can emit harmful rays. The presence of our mobile phone at our bedside can cause insomnia or repeated awakenings during sleep. They also cause a change in the system of certain self-regulating processes, such as our heart rate or biological clock.

Based on research, scientists have found that such habits with our smart phones can bring about the following health issues:

1. Increased risk of cancer

Increased light at night leads to disturbed sleeping, and this increases the risk of cancer, especially breast and prostate cancer. Melatonin is a potent antioxidant and is a natural body weapon against cancer, but is suppressed by the “blue light”. If this happens once, it might not be a huge health problem, but the continued use of smart phones at bedtime causes serious health problems.

2. Insomnia

“Blue light” interrupts the production of melatonin, as mentioned above, and this hormone regulates the body’s sleep cycle. If the body lacks sleep, the skewed sleep cycle will lead to multiple health problems:
• Weight gain
• Depression
• Cardiovascular problems
• Memory loss
• Aged skin
• Slower response time

3. Eye damage

Exposure to the “blue light” at night leads to damage to the retina and macular degeneration, which is loss of central vision, or ability to see in front of you as well as cataracts. According to a doctor, whose 35-year-old patient had cloudy, cataract-like eyes at age 75, using smartphones before going to bed is the main cause of the problem, but this needs to be examined further.

4. Explosive Danger

Yes, mobile phones can explode. Sleeping with a mobile phone that has too much radiation can expose you to a very big danger. The explosion might be as a result of bad battery or you charging the phone for too long. I know we are fond of charging the phone while using it on the bed, along with the line we might sleep off leaving the phone charging. So keep your phone far from you, and always make sure you unplug the charger before going to bed.
